So finally it happened, after years of rumours and rumors on Google OS, its official now. Google is going to hit the market with its own Operating System called Google Chrome OS . It seems like Google is heading backwards, first they developed a browser and now around it they are going to engineer an operating system.

So what does Google Chrome Means ?
Well according to their press release they are expected to release it not before 2010. As its going to be a very basic operating system so of course it wont be as powerful as Microsoft or OSX. But its going to be open source source so its free and with the Google API experience it would give developers to develop apps on it free of cost and maybe sell it on their app store. Apart from that competition with Microsoft 7 and OSX is going to be tough. Consumer market maybe but corporate sector i am not sure.

Features of Google Chrome Operating System:
Though in their press release Google did not reveal any part of their operating system so lets assume what could be so wonderful about Google OS, could it be revolutionary like iPhone which i am not sure as they always build simple / better and then focus on revolution. So here is what i think Google OS could bring along:

It wont crash at least it would not have a blue screen.

No viruses and Trojans, probably they are redoing the architecture around Linux so no virus and secure.

Gmail Account will be your log in name to the operation system, you are logged into the operating system you are logged into every Google product no more login / password screens.

Not cluttered with baseless applications like .Net framework in Windows Vista, and a chunk of useless software’s and applications.

Its Free of cost means reduced prices on notebooks (though Ubuntu / Linux made such attempts didn’t work out pretty well so lets see what Google pulls out of that).

Very simple and easy to install 3 clicks install would be awesome, of course drivers should be installed with it.

As it wont have cluttered applications so maybe they might be able to jump up internet speed / video streaming speed / browsing speed.

No need for offline applications, web will be build in the operating system everything in it will be connected with web, for office usage use Google Docs, Calendar use Google Calendar.

Very few desktop applications, initially or for a couple of years.

No more flashy screens or desktop, simple clean and usable.

No more starting an OS you open your laptop and your operating system is on, basically there shouldn’t be a shutdown or restart feature in the operating system.

Maybe web apps would be able to work offline in Google Chrome, i.e. python application, php, java application will run smoothly offline and fill in the lack of missing apps.

Interface is going to be as simple as Chrome, means no flashy elements, no effects and no heavy graphical user interface.

Core focus of the Operating system is going to be go online and work around the web, for office use Google Docs, for videos use youTube.

Well they are mostly just random prediction, no one can be sure how well it goes or would it be Microsoft OS killer. We would have to wait and see.

If you are a user of windows that could be xp /2000 / 98 you will notice that with the passing time your system will start to slow down, booting will take more time, applications will response slowly. These issues are not hardware related but rather are due to huge chunk of temporary files on our system which are created when particular software is installed and executed or while you browse the internet, download applications, songs or just data .In some cases these files are automatically erased when the software terminates. However there are files which reside on the system until they are searched and deleted . These file occupy precious memory space and slow down the processor speed .Hence they have to be deleted.

This clean up can easily be done with a disk clean up facility that is pre-installed in your windows operating system. You can easily access it by

Click Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup— or —

Click Start | Run and in the Open box type cleanmgr and click OK

A pop up will open up and will start analyzing your disk which might take some time after which it will present you with a number of options displaying the files the windows think are not longer required and is not used you simply select the files and hit Ok and you system will be free from files you no longer need.

XP Disk Cleaner
Another way out is with the help of XP Disk cleaner if you are not satisfied with the default applications, the xp disk cleaner makes the task a bit easier and quicker . Apart from the default software xp disk cleaner not only searches not just the standard places where temporary files are stored (such as cache and internet history), but also the rest of the disk space and deletes them. Files which are old or duplicate are searched and removed. The application also provides a module which de fragments the memory space and enhances the system speed further more. The user interface of the application is very user generic and easy to use. The minimum operating system required to run XP Disk Cleaner is Windows 95, NT4, 98, Me, 2000, XP, 2003 Server. A temporary version of the application carrying a size of 0.64 Mega Bytes can be downloaded from Soft Sea.com (www.softsea.com) .However the complete version can be purchased for a price of 19.95 US Dollars. The software is designed by XP tools (www.xp-tools.com).If you want you system to be free of unwanted memory occupation, XP Disk Cleaner is one of the best available options.

Oh yes Firefox3 broke the Guinness world record, well of course they did it reason being there is no other record to broken so no matter how many downloads they got the Guinness world record was to be made.

So Mozilla Firefox did make a Guinness world record of the most downloaded software within 24hours. The number of downloads went up to 7378216. But there is bit confusion on that as well. If you check on the home page of spreadfirefox on the right top you will find a heading with blue background stating Firefox downloads : 579137807 [check here] & if you look on the world record page with the map of the world you will find downloads : 7378216.[check here]

So which is the actual value & this does put doubts in its authentication as well.

FireFox 3 Review

Apart from that most important promise of the Firefox was fullfilled with the new version, yes Firefox3 is much faster then Firefox2 & Internet Explorer. The new tabs & new windows open really quickly.

The interface is more mature and decent not bad indeed, some hidden and interesting feature have been added one of my favorite is the ability to drag any image from a website to a folder on your desktop no need to use save image as.

The Website ID feature is quite cool and protects from phishing and help authenticate the sites who have purchased certificates for authentication like paypal, ebay. This feature has been added to the Firefox’s new Smart Location bar. The location bar has been the core focus of development, and have integrated three great features to it, one was the website ID click on the favicon on location bar and you can see its ID to verify its authentication. Second you can simple bookmark any site with only one click by clicking the star on the location bar or usding [ctr + d]. Thirdly once you type your address there is a list of recomendation which do have a flaw as it shows the Title of the site and its URL and sometimes its difficult to find the exact URL.

Apart from more on the features can be checked out at Mozilla Firefox3 Features

Upcoming Adobe Dreamweaver
The new release of Dreamweaver comes with many exciting surprises some of which my most favorite are :

Code hinting for Ajax and JavaScript frameworks means support for popular JavaScript frameworks including jQuery, Prototype, and Spry.

Photoshop Integration Drag and drop an Adobe Photoshop® PSD file into a Dreamweaver page to create an image Smart Object.

Adobe® AIR™ authoring support Create multiplatform desktop applications from your Dreamweaver HTML and JavaScript sites with new Adobe AIR™ authoring support.

Fireworks used for rapidly prototype websites, application interfaces, and other interactive designs. Create, edit, and optimize web graphics more accurately and faster than ever with the enhanced toolset. Demo your design live for your client, or e-mail an interactive PDF file. This version comes with

Too many passwords are quite difficult to remeber though if you do but still who wants to type the same user name / password every day so generally a good way is to ask Firefox to save the passwords. But what to do if you really need to know what password you save would you prefer going throught the long password recovery process by all websites or you need some help in there.

Well here is the catch nodoubt its easy to recover passwords but its unsafe as well so firstly. So lets how unsafe they can be. To see which passwords you have saved into Firefox simply go to :
Tools >> options >> security >> Show Password
There you will find the URL’s and usernames of all the sites who’s password you have saved in Firefox now to reveal the password simply click on “Show Passwords” and firefox will show you all the passwords. This is good way of recovering your passwords but very unsecure as well as any one using your computer can easily steal all your passwords and you can’t do anything thing about it. But there is a way..

To protect your passwords follow the same path go to :
Tools >> Options >> Security >>
and there you will see a check box asking Change Master Password check it true and a window will open asking you setup a password type your password click ok and close it now if you go back to password recovery location and once you click it to ask to show all passwords it will ask you for the Master Password.

source [firefox facts]

Ubuntu released it’s 8.04 version and promises a 3 yars of free updates before its taken down with the next release. Well if you dont know what ubuntu is then its a linux Operating system which is free, more safe and more reliable then xp. When the world linux comes the core issue with people is that they immediately jump up to the conclusion that its a complicated system, must require some high command or some strong knowledge of linux to run and install it, well people you are wrong ubuntu is as easy as any other operations system which you have used like xp, vista. Unlike the rest of the operating systems you get to know them when you install them, but incase of ubuntu if you are not sure you can simple run it before you install it with the help of live feature in its installation DVD.

As far the the preview is concerned Live Mesh is more of a central data center for individuals, where you digital data is synchronized at a data center and is available via internet. The Microsoft Live Mesh is based on 4 core purposes.

Data Centralization

Application Access

Sharing / File Sharing

Socializing & Social Networking

1- Data Centralization
The application comes with a “Live Mesh Software” which once installs creates a seperate folder where you put up your digital data and all the information in that folder is synchronized with your online desktop. The online desktop so far will have 5GB of space.

2- Application Centralized Access
Apart from data centralization Live Mesh also promises that with your online desktop you would be able to run any software / application that you have installed on your local system. Seems like either you would connect directly to your desktop using remote desktop connection or some how Live Mesh will pick up the applications you have installed on your machine and put them online. Really looking forward to what this is about.

3- Sharing / Spread
off course where there is digital data there is sharing and where there is sharing there is going to be violation of file sharing and copyright issues so prbably this issue will rise when the application goes live and people start sharing there Music collections, videos, movies etc. Though i am a bit unsure about the speed of file sharing / file transfer.

4- Socialize & Social Networking
And yes there is going to be social networking tool, once you share stuff you make friends, IM them, you can also keep track of there activity , what files they changes, who is online and a bunch of stuff.

So far Live Mesh seems like a kool tool but mostly it depends how it performs what issues it faces and how far it can go. Starting with 5GB space seems nice very less for a single user.

Do you trust your anti virus application and have complete faith that it wont cheat on you. Well no need to trust it completely now you can create your own dummy virus file and see how your anti virus application reacts to it.

The dummy virus file is known as EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File & was developed by European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research. It was developed to allow people, companies and AV programmers to test their software without having a real computer virus that could damage the computer. (more info at Wikepedia)

How to Create a EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File
Creating a file is quite easy just open Notepad, write
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

and save the file as either as a .com file. As soon as you save it your anti virus should react and inform and try to remove the file immediately, if it does then yes you anti virus is running and keeping the viruses away if not then i guess you should think about getting some other anti virus.

Protection of a computer is essential, though i never believed that i had to be serious in protection of PC’s until i was hit by viruses and once a virus gets through there are spy ware’s, Trojans and God know what else in the package. So now i do recommend that we should all protect our PC’s. When ever we buy a new PC i.e. laptop or a desktop it is usually packed with softwares of course if your are buying a Windows based machine. Initially they all have a 60 day trial period for Norton Anti virus or Symentic Anti virus and we are in peace and hardly bother about the issue of PC protection.

But once those 60 days are over there is message “Your trial period is over please purchase” at that point you have two options either uninstall the app and continue your work and wait for a virus attack, or pay 35$ – 50$ anually for a basic protection or you can spend – 0$ and get hold of one of the free anti virus softwares we have mentioned below.

Avira AntiVir personal edition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/

Avira Anti virus personal classic edition is my personal favorite, i have installed it on my shinny new laptop with Windows Vista Home edition and it performing real good.

Things i like about it is

Its Fast & very easy to use

Very less use of computer resources

Very Good detection rates

Good auto updater and live updates twice a day sometimes

Available for all platforms Win XP / Vista / Linux

Real time protection (computer viruses, worms, trojan horses )

Protection against expensive dialers

Detects and deletes root kits

Its FREE ….

Con’s of Avira

Annoying full-screen pop-ups when you update advertising Avira’s paid software apps

Does not provide e-mail protections which you hardly need if you use gmail its required with Outlook or Thunderbird

No Protection against spy ware and ad ware.

Benchmark Results:
94.26% : total running time: 14 min, 23 sec; total files scanned: 182,215 (source Yahoo)

So far Avira is the no1 free Anti virus application so far.

Download Avira AntiVir personal edition

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

AVG Anti-Virus is the most configurable anti virus software. The installation is bit complex if you don’t use the default button as it asks to many questions. It has no cost for home users or no commercial users and provides high level detection capability to protect the computer. Apart from that AVG integrates with Outlook, Eudora, and The BAT! to scan incoming and outgoing e-mail; users of Outlook Express or other clients can configure the Personal E-mail scanner manually

Things that are good

Real Time Protection

On-demand scanner

E-Mail Protection

Auto Updates at slow speed

Virus Vult for quarantining

Rescue Disk

Heuristic Scanning.

Cons

Takes too much of computer resources

Limited support for compressed/archive types

Higher than average rate of false positives

No Protection against spy ware and ad ware.

Benchmark Results: no tests performed yet

Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5

avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Avast is yet another great free anti virus software, its free edition is available for home users but there is a catch, once you download it will work for 60 days after which you need to register by providing your e-mail address and you will receive One Year Registration free of cost without giving any credit card info. After one year you need to re register it. Its interface is quite weired and looks more like a Winamp or a multimedia player and is a bit complex to use. Apart from that it has a basic Anti Virus Kernel, automatic update and P2P and IM shields for blocking virus transfers.

Pro’s

Good Anti Virus Kernel

Protects against virus transfers from other devices like IM, P2P

Generic SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 scanner

MS Outlook plugin for protection of e-mails from Outlook

Repairing executable files using Virus Recovery Database (VRDB)

Con’s

Requires e-mail and Registration for One years free license only

User Interface is of no good complicated & quite slow in loading

PUSH updates for pro version only means you wait for your turn to get updates

No Script Blocker

With the launch of Windows Vista Microsoft is spreading around the news of yet another launch of Windows 7 by 2009, the news is picking up so much pace that recently a Hoax version of Windows 7 was found over all major torrent sites and those who downloaded found out later that it was just a cute joke.

So far the Windows 7 launch might turn out to be a good strategy, Microsoft Windows Vista didnt do much good to the version, its supper heavy interface too many of Security Alerts and still a bit unstable image didnt go well with the Windows Vista. Though one thing is quite clear and seems quite clean that the Microsoft Windows 7 will be a version of Microsoft Vista with the same functionality, same enhancements just wrapped around a better packing and new marketing campaign.

In Mid of 2007 i switch to Windows Vista as it came pre installed with my laptop, initially windows Vista didn’t perform at any standards, yes the initial looks were good, with shinny bar’s, desktop widgets, wallpapers themes, icons but the problems was that it was very slow in performance, it used to get hang the compute with IE7 and when i started using it i happend to find ouw how bad it sucks in performance.

But with a little support of a technical friend i ripped off all the junk pre installed softwares, installed Firefox, OpenOffice, and switched the setting to high performance removing all the shinney bar and my problems got solved.

Now whats next we got to see is what will be Windows 7 and IE 8 going to be like on which i will add in my next post.
