Create your own Mashups easily with Ubiquity

Posted by zee on August 28th, 2008 Comment »

Mozilla Corp on Tuesday released Ubiquity an experiment to connect web with a language or a command line to run daily tasks more quickly and more easily. Ubiquity is a sort of a Mozilla plugin which helps in creating command lines for different web tasks or you can say which can help you create mashups that get activated on the commands you set for it.

What really Ubiuquity is ?

According to Mozilla the main goal of Ubiquity is to give users the power to create mashups that can fetch data of there choice with a single command from different websites. It can be a sort of web agent that instead of forcing you to search will get data of your choice from your recommended web properties. With Ubiuquity you can set up commands to manipulate web tasks like mapping, translation, shopping or retrieving entries from Wikipedia, Yelp or Google Maps any many more.

What can i do with Ubiquity ?

If you happen to plan vacation your process of planning would be to first search the list of good vacation spots, then you would find about air fares and available flights, then hotel reservation and compare their price and then of course you want to fetch the map of the location along with pictures of the spot this kind of task can consume allot of your time. For each task you make searches, sort and compare records. But with ubiquit you can simply set up a command line stating ‘vacation’ and create mashup that will fetch data from various websites of your choice including vacation spots, air fares, hotel reservation, and Google maps of the location with just one command line ‘vacation’ & help you compare and make descions. Thus instead of spending more time on search you can create your own web agent that will perform all such tasks for you.

How to install configure Ubiquity ?

The current version is prototype and is available at Mozilla website for free download, you can follow their tutorial to install the application here.

Mac Users > You’ll need to install Growl. This is a Mac OS X system extension that applications can use to display unobtrusive transparent messages. Ubiquity uses Growl notifications to show you the output of commands and tell you about errors.

Windows Users > On Windows (XP and later), you don’t need to install anything special, as Ubiquity will use the operating system’s built-in “toaster”-style pop-up messaging.

Linux Users >On Linux, we don’t have a good messaging system yet. If you have a suggestion for how Ubiquity can display messages on Linux (preferably in a way that will work on all major distros and window managers), please tell us about it.

Charge your laptops & cellphones without Wires

Posted by zee on August 28th, 2008 Comment »

Are you irritated with the tangling wires making you tumble while charging a device or with simplifying a wire coiled in the most pathetic way. Well here is solution which removes all worries relating to coiled wires and power sockets.

Intel introduced a wireless charging application which charges batteries for all electronic devices from a distance. The basic technology employed by Intel this device named WREL,( a wireless resonant energy link) is electromagnetic induction. With the help of this technology the user can charge his device at a distance of meters even when there is an obstruction present. This obstruction could be a wall , a wooden appliance or any other electronic device.

WREL promises to deliver wireless power safely and efficiently. The technology relies on strongly coupled resonators. Intel says that with this technology enabled in a laptop, for example, batteries could be recharged when the laptop gets within several feet of the transmit resonator. Many engineering challenges remain, but the company’s researchers hope to find a way to cut the last cord in mobile devices and someday enable wireless power in Intel-based platforms.

The constituents of this magnetic system include a reception socket which is installed at any wall. Along with the socket there is a resonator which works on the magnetic technology.According to Telecom web , the efficiency rate of the system is seventy percent. This means that the device generates 75 percent output from the cent percent input given. It is also listed that WREL can power a light device like a bulb from a distance of meters.

Now let’s glance at the technical functioning of the system. The device works on the basis of two resonators, one which generates magnetic signals and the other which receive them and charges the related device as a result. An example in this connection can be a laptop. Intel researcher told the BBC, “The next stage we are thinking about is to recharge devices like laptops and cell phones wirelessly,  so we are shrinking the size of the coils down to the size of laptops. The coils would be embedded in a monitor or a picture frame or desk.” But also admitted the technology is at least five years away, if not more, of becoming a reality.

Find out who is blocking you Torrent Connection

Posted by zee on August 27th, 2008 Comment »

Its quite frustrating when you are trying to download some stuff from a torrent or a p2p connection but your connection keeps on breaking down. Another scenario could be your VOIP call getting dropped up. You might try to blame your software or computer setting for that but the real culprit could be your ISP.

Keeping this in mind a la Comcast the electronic frontier foundation (EFF) has released Switzerland an open source Network testing tool.

SWITZERLAND indicates the data lost or modified between clients. It identifies the effected packets to the concerned user. The main cause of data loss is the interference of the ISP (Internet Service Provider) and firewall security applications. SWITZERLAND uses P2P (Pier to Pier) technology. This application can also identify the packets with a random pattern. It uses multi client functionality by which it can detect the loss data of more than one user connected to the same server. It also identifies the user to which the data belongs. SWITZERLAND is an application which is not restricted to the TCP technology in its functionality.

How to use Switzerland
How to run tests well basically any packets exchanged between Switzerland & client connected to same server are automatically tested. But to test across different server you can make use of there wiki page where there is a list of bit Torrent seeded and download.

If you are a user of windows that could be  xp /2000 / 98  you will notice that with the passing time your system will start to slow down, booting will take more time, applications will response slowly.  These issues are not hardware related but rather are due to huge chunk of temporary files on our system which are created when particular software is installed and executed or while you browse the internet, download applications, songs or just data .In some cases these files are automatically erased when the software terminates. However there are files which reside on the system until they are searched and deleted . These file occupy precious memory space and slow down the processor speed .Hence they have to be deleted.

This clean up can easily be done with a disk clean up facility that is pre-installed in your windows operating system. You can easily access it by

  • Click Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup— or —
  • Click Start | Run and in the Open box type cleanmgr and click OK

A pop up will open up and will start analyzing your disk which might take some time after which it will present you with a number of options displaying the files the windows think are not longer required and is not used you simply select the files and hit Ok and you system will be free from files you no longer need.

XP Disk Cleaner
Another way out is with the help of  XP Disk cleaner if you are not satisfied with the default applications, the xp disk cleaner makes the task a bit easier and quicker . Apart from the default software xp disk cleaner not only searches not just the standard places where temporary files are stored (such as cache and internet history), but also the rest of the disk space and deletes them. Files which are old or duplicate are searched and removed. The application also provides a module which de fragments the memory space and enhances the system speed further more. The user interface of the application is very user generic and easy to use. The minimum operating system required to run XP Disk Cleaner is Windows 95, NT4, 98, Me, 2000, XP, 2003 Server. Read Data from Scratched or Corrupt CD’s & DVD’s

Posted by zee on August 14th, 2008 Comment »

Every once in a while we do end up into getting a corrupt cd drive, or unable to read from drive errors. CD’s and DVD are the most common and cheapest data storage devices. However these optical devices are quite sensitive and get corrupted easily. The main causes are dust and scratches .The defection of these memory storage result in data loss. In these circumstances recovering data is almost an impossible task until backup is available. So here are a bunch of way to recover data.

How the data is stored in cd & what causes the loss
If you take a look at the recording surface of the cd you can easily see one or mor scratched. CD’s data is stored on a metal layer inside it which is either golden or silver. The metal layer is protected with a transparent plastic to protect it from scratches. Usually the scratches caused on a cd are on that plastic layer and if they are deep and can collect dust in them then, the laser that reads data cannot pass through the scratches and thus read error starts to pop up.

Washing, Polishing & Waxing the CD using Soap, Toothpaste or Vaseline .

  1. First way out is to wash the cd, you can even use a detergent, but just wash it using your fingers only to clean it up “no sponges”.
  2. Polish the plastic surface of the cd which can easily be done with a toothpaste. Yes It works wonders, you don’t have to spend on professional cleaning kits when you can easily do it with the toothpaste. Take a cotton swab, rub gently the paste over the scratches until they disappear. Once done wash the CD with water let dry and then try it out.
  3. Wax the tracks. If polishing doesn’t work, apply a very thin coat of Vaseline, liquid car wax, neutral shoe polish, or furniture wax to the CD’s playing surface. Wipe excess off using clean, soft, lint-free cloth in a radial (inside to outside) motion. If using wax, follow manufacturer’s instructions (some need to dry before you wipe them off, while others should be wiped off while still wet).

Top 3 Free CD Recovery Software’s

  1. CD Recovery Toolbox Free
CD Recovery Toolbox Free is a data recovery tool, designed to recover files from scratched or otherwise damaged or corrupt CD, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-Ray disks. Just select the drive that contains the media you want to recover from, check the files you want to restore and start the recovery process. Depending on the level of damage, the recovery process may take a long time, and may not recover all the files. It did recover a good portion of images for us from a badly scratched CD that Windows was not able to read properly.
  2. Roadkil’s Unstoppable Copier
Recovers files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made useable even if some parts were not recoverable in the end. Program now supports batch copying to automate the programs use and save copying/restore copying jobs. The level of data recovery can be changed to enable very intense data recovery through to skipping damaged files completely. The data recovery process can be paused and resumed mid file. Facebook gets a face uplift

Posted by editor on August 10th, 2008 Comment »

Facebook changed its looks. The new design was launched at PALO ALTO CA on 20th July. Keeping it in beta and testing phase the user have options to either switch to the new design or keep the current one. Though facebook haven’t made any functional changes so this revamp can only be labeled as a design change rather then a version 2 of facebook.

According to facebook the new design took about an year in making. During which many public opinions was taken in ground.

Face book face uplift bring the following enhancements

  • The feed technology has been enhanced .Content from indirect contacts can be written on the user wall. The user wall now portrays more recent images and stories related to the user
  • The stories now include add on features. The types of stories include short stories, long stories and one liner. User can customize their stories according to their suitability. This includes story content and appearance.
  • The content limits have been enhanced with the help of publisher. Users can manage videos, images and text all in one place instead of individual applications. A user can also design content on the profile of any of his contacts through his profile.
  • The navigation menus have been improved. Individual menus have been designed for user information, photos, boxes and the wall, for each user.
  • Users have been provided rights to accept or reject a particular design. Each user can use a particular application and decide whether he wants a particular application on his profile.
  • The security features have been enhanced. Users can restrict the viewing of all their content including photos and videos .They can allow particular users to view their content as well as restrict the ones they want.

Why did facebook change its design?

Although Mark Zuckerberg wrote a complete letter stating the three goals which they wanted to achived by the new layout :

We had three goals to improve Facebook in this version. First, we wanted to make everything clean and simple to use. Reducing clutter makes it easier for you to find what you’re looking for and share information with others. Second, we wanted to give you more control over your profile. Everyone should be able to express themselves how they want, which means privacy controls and control over how content appears on your profile. Lastly, we wanted to show the most recent and relevant content. People share so much on Facebook that it’s easier to keep up with your friends by focusing on the newest and most important information

But the real reason for a new layout design for facebook might be a little different. One of the biggest flaw with the previous version of facebook was very small adspot size. The only size facebook could sell was 110px by 80px box which didn’t made much use for advertisers. But the new layout brings new spots for ads and my prediction the first one is going to be 300px by 300px for the main page and a 200px by 200px for the profile page.
